Athens International Airport is named after Eleftherios Venizelos, an important Athenian politician of XX Century. Flights to Athens experienced a drastic fall due to the economic crisis in 2011-2012: there were 16.5 million travellers in transit in 2009 that became 12.9 million in 2012. Eleftherios Venizelos Airport has been operative since 2001, in place of the old Ellinikon International Airport and it has been enhanced in occasion of 2004 Olympics.

Athens Venizelos Airport is a really modern airport, used as a getaway for Mid-East and Asian destinations. Moreover, it is the airport with the major traffic towards Greek islands, such as Santorin, Mykonos, Kos, Rode and Crete. It is the hub for national airlines such as Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines and in the future it might be used for A380 Airbus flights.
In the airport there are two Terminals, Terminal A and B, connected by a subterranean passage. At Terminal A land passengers of flights to Athens from Extra-Schengen countries, such as London-Athens flights operated by British Airways or Moscow-Athens by Aeroflot. Terminal A is even the terminal used by Middle Eastern and Asian airlines: EgyptAir, on Cairo-Athens routes, El Al on the flight Tel Aviv-Athens, Emirates on the route Dubai-Athens and Etihad Airways on the flight Abu Dhabi-Athens. Terminal A is the one used by carriers operating international flights, such as Air China on Beijing-Athens route, Delta Air Lines from New York and Singapore Airlines on the flight Singapore-Athens.
At Terminal B land passengers of flights from the Shengen area. Alitalia, Air France, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa and low cost airlines such as EasyJet and Germanwings use Terminal B. The Terminal is the arriving point even for passengers from important routes, such as Rome-Athens, Frankfurt-Athens, Paris-Athens and for the national and international traffic of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air.
Near the airport there is a lack of accommodation, for this reason many tourists choose to stay in one of the many hotels in Athens. However, the nearest hotel to Athens Airport is Holiday Inn Athens Attiva Av, Airport W, 13 kilometres away, along Attika Odos highway, reachable by a shuttle bus.
How to get to Athens from the Airport
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is situated 30 kilometres away from the city, near Markopoulo and Koropi. It is connected to the Greek capital by the new 6-lane highway Attikì Odos: people who rent a car at Athens airport can get to Port of Piraeus within 50 minutes. To get to Athens from the airport there is the suburban train arriving at Larissis train station, the subway arriving in Syntagma Plein, in the city centre, and different public buses lines.
